K2, through its legacy as Kintsugi, has taken a front-row role in the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), the world’s first large-scale autonomous racing series held at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit. A2RL brings together global teams of engineers and computer scientists to race fully driverless Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars, using artificial intelligence as the performance differentiator. Competing as Team Kinetiz, Kintsugi/K2 formed a joint team with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) for the inaugural A2RL event. As the only Southeast Asian representative on the grid, Team Kinetiz showcased its combined strengths in AI, robotics and autonomous driving against leading institutions and organisations from the USA, Germany, Italy, the UAE, China and Hungary. A2RL is organised by ASPIRE, the technology programme management pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, and is positioned as the world’s largest autonomous racing league. Eight international teams compete for a US$2.25 million prize pool, with coders and engineers acting as the “drivers” through their AI algorithms and software stacks. All teams run identical race cars; the only variable is the intelligence of the autonomous systems controlling them. (tii.ae)
For K2, autonomous racing is more than a motorsport experiment. The company describes Team Kinetiz as being “at the heart of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League,” using A2RL as a high-speed testbed to stress-test advanced AI systems in perception, navigation, planning and real-time decision-making. Each lap is treated as a live experiment to refine algorithms that can later be adapted for autonomous mobility, logistics and other real-world applications. (K2)
The joint NTU–Kintsugi team has developed parallel approaches in modular planning and control and end-to-end AI-enabled autonomous driving, combining sensor fusion from LiDAR, IMU and GPS to generate precise real-time maps and optimised racing lines. Deep reinforcement learning and large-scale simulation are used to train the AI, allowing it to learn from thousands of virtual laps and the behaviours of experienced human drivers. (EurekAlert!)
A2RL’s mission goes beyond the racetrack: the league is designed to inspire STEM talent, accelerate innovation in autonomous vehicles, and position Abu Dhabi as a global hub for advanced mobility technologies. For K2, the experience and technology built through Team Kinetiz form a key pillar of its broader autonomy strategy, which includes autonomous ride-hailing, logistics and robotics solutions developed in Abu Dhabi. As K2 deepens its work in autonomy and AI through A2RL, the same expertise stands to benefit future collaborations in aerospace, autonomous systems and mobility with partners such as Pahang Aerospace City and UMPSA’s Versus venture studio.
